Songkran Festival — Thai New Year on Hollywood Blvd
The Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles is the largest celebration of its kind outside Thailand, drawing approximately 100,000 attendees annually and featuring over 200 vendors, Thai dance, Buddhist blessings, and the traditional water-throwing ritual [1][4]. The festival was co-founded by the Thai Community Development Center (Thai CDC), which was established in 1994 and also led the seven-year campaign that resulted in the official designation of Thai Town by the Los Angeles City Council in 1999 [1]. While the festival originated in 2004, the 2026 edition marks the 17th annual event, scheduled for Sunday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. (or 8 p.m. per some sources), and is free to attend [3][4].
History & Significance Thai Town, nicknamed Thailand’s ‘77th province,’ is home to the largest Thai community outside Thailand—80,000 to 100,000 Thai citizens and Thai-Americans—and the festival commemorates Songkran, the Thai New Year, symbolizing renewal, cleansing, and rejuvenation [3][4]. The event is organized by Thai CDC and features Buddhist temple participation, almsgiving ceremonies, and cultural exhibitions [1][2].
Food & Vendors The festival boasts a dense food-vendor row with over 200 booths selling Thai food, desserts, beverages, silk, silver, ceramics, and handicrafts [1]. In 2026, more than 40 food vendors will participate, including a special appearance by Thipsamai Padthai Pratoopee, a renowned restaurant from Thailand [3]. A highlight is the attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most Pad Thai sold in one hour, involving 30 restaurants and 30 woks, with 1,200 festivalgoers needed to participate [3][4]. Participants receive an official Pad Thai world record T-shirt and certificate [4]. Other food offerings include khanom krok (coconut pancakes), vegan cuisine, and a Chang Beer Garden [2][3].
Activities & Integration The festival integrates local restaurants and cultural organizations across five stages, featuring the Miss Thai USA Beauty Pageant, Muay Thai sparring, live EDM DJs, cooking shows, a Lumwong dance stage, free Thai massage from the Nuad Thai & Spa Association, and a showcase of silks from the Thai royal family [2][3]. The event also offers free health screenings and an outdoor movie [2].
