Honduran cuisine Garifuna and mestizo traditions in LA
The only LA restaurant that explicitly identifies Garifuna heritage is Gusina Saraba (formerly the Saraba food truck), owned by Winston Miranda. It opened a permanent stall at Mercado La Paloma in Historic South Central in July 2022 [1]. The restaurant is described as “LA’s only Garifuna restaurant” and serves Belizean-Garifuna dishes such as hudut (mashed green plantain ball with fish soup), bundiga (fish and green bananas in coconut), and tapou (fish stew with green plantains and root vegetables) [1][2]. Miranda’s food truck originally operated in Gardena and around South LA [2]. The LA Garifuna community numbers about 100,000 people [2]. The community clusters in South LA / South Central, where many Belizean restaurants and cultural events are found, particularly along Western Avenue [2]. The article also mentions that Garifuna women can be seen preparing hudut in South LA during cultural holidays [2].
