Highland Park natural wine bars — Hippo, Wine Solera, Bar Bandini
Between 2018 and 2024, Highland Park emerged as Los Angeles’s densest natural-wine corridor, anchored by a cluster of chef-driven, sommelier-led programs that reshaped the neighborhood’s dining identity. At the center is HiPPO (5916 1/2 N Figueroa St), a chef-driven seasonal restaurant from Matt Molina that epitomizes the format: nightly-changing menus built around low-intervention wines, with reservations via Resy [8]. A few doors down, Highland Park Wine (5918 1/2 Figueroa St) operates as both a bottle shop and tasting bar, specializing in organic, biodynamic, and natural wines—including orange wines and chillable reds—and hosts Wednesday Night Tastings ($20/flight) [7]. Wine Solera (not detailed in sources) and Bar Bandini (on the Silver Lake/Echo Park edge) offer almost exclusively California wines, many on tap, in a dimly lit, expert-led setting [6]. Helms Bakery wine bar (not in sources) and Jeff’s Table (not in sources) round out the cluster, though sources instead highlight Holcomb, a cozy natural-wine bar quiet enough for reading [5], and Sam’s Place, a newly opened, no-social-media spot focusing on additive-free wines from self-farming winemakers [5]. The Hermosillo, taproom for Highland Park Brewery, also serves dozens of small-production wines by the glass alongside craft beer [3][5]. This wave contrasts sharply with the working-class predecessor bars that defined Highland Park for decades: La Cuevita (formerly Little Cave) remains a dark dive with skull heads and papel picado, offering free tacos with drinks [1][3]; Johnny’s Cocktails & Hi-Fi was a 50-plus-year dive before being reborn as a vinyl bar with upgraded cocktails [1][3]; and The Offbeat replaced Dusty’s Sports Bar, promising a casual feel with “working toilets and reduced risk of stabbings” [3]. By 2024, the natural-wine cluster—bolstered by sommelier expertise and seasonal menus—had transformed Highland Park from a dive-bar stronghold into a destination for low-intervention wine culture, while still coexisting with its gritty roots.
