Chalav Yisrael in Los Angeles

Chalav Yisrael (Cholov Yisroel) is milk produced under continuous Jewish supervision from milking through bottling. In Los Angeles, the OK Kosher certification supervises local production by companies such as Kosher Pastures and La Crème. Historically, local production ceased in 2013 when Norwalk Dairy closed, leading to reliance on East Coast imports with higher costs and quality issues. By 2019, local production resumed, providing fresh Chalav Yisrael milk to the community. The price premium over standard kosher milk is not documented in current sources, but historically was at least fifty cents per gallon nationally.
