Overview
Mundu is the fruit of Garcinia dulcis, a tropical tree in the Clusiaceae family native to Southeast Asia. The fruit is round, yellow to orange when ripe, with a thin skin and soft, juicy pulp that tastes sweet and mildly acidic. It is eaten fresh or used in preserves and traditional drinks.
Origin and history
Garcinia dulcis is native to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and has been cultivated in these regions for its fruit [1]. The tree grows in lowland tropical forests and is also found in parts of Thailand and Papua New Guinea. Historical records from colonial-era botanists describe it as a common village tree in the Malay Archipelago [1]. It has not been widely commercialized outside its native range.
Varieties and aliases
- Mundu (Philippines, Indonesia)
- Gourka (Bangladesh)
- Maphuut (Thailand)
- No widely recognized named cultivars are documented in the available literature.
Culinary uses
Mundu is most commonly eaten fresh out of hand when fully ripe. The pulp can be separated from the seeds and used in fruit salads, syrups, or fermented into a local vinegar in the Philippines [2]. Unripe fruit is sometimes pickled or used in sour dishes as a substitute for tamarind. The seeds are not typically consumed.
Cross-cuisine context
Mundu has no widely recognized analogue in Mexican cuisine. Comparison-by-function: its sweet-sour fresh fruit profile is similar to that of the yellow mombin (Spondias mombin, known as jobo in Mexico), though the two are botanically unrelated. In Southeast Asian cuisines, mundu is sometimes used similarly to mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), its more famous relative, though mundu is less aromatic and less sweet.
Notes for cooks
- Ripe mundu yields slightly to gentle pressure and has a bright yellow to orange skin. Green fruit is unripe and very sour.
- The fruit bruises easily and should be handled gently. It does not store well at room temperature for more than a few days.
- No common substitute exists in Western markets. If unavailable, fresh mangosteen or ripe yellow plum can approximate the texture and sweetness in a fruit salad.
